American Medical System

Post by Tim » June 30th, 2007, 1:24 pm

Today I had to go see my doctor here in the States about several issues, included several 'blips' from my blood test, as well as issues I've been having with RSI later.

I had last seen my doctor two months ago and felt relatively underwhelmed by her response, but she wasn't so bad.

Going back I'm amazed at the treatment I got. I was berated for returning "so soon", and essentially dismissed from her office without any of my problems being addressed. The reason? I don't pass the "golden test" for each issue. So although I am showing signs of various ailments, because I don't reach some magic number for each of them the insurance won't pay for further investigation.

Furthermore when I asked for advice on my RSI and a prescription for a splint, or at least a referral, she literally flat out refused to even examine my arm. The reason? "It's most likely caused by your work" (since I'm a User Experience Engineer) and therefore "not covered by insurance".

I was told I would essentially have to sue my work to get it covered.

What the fuck?! This is what makes up $3k of my benefits package?

I should mention this is a Harvard graduated MD who lists her specialty as "preventative medicine".

When I visit Australia in September I'm going to get some real help.

That's fucking balls. As fucked as australia is, i'd have serious reservations about moving to the US because of the healthcare situation alone.

Agreed. It's somewhat mitigated by the fact we could proooobably fly back here should things go pear shaped, but if for some reason you were too unwell to fly or needed urgent attention, it'd scare the hell out of me being at the mercy of their system. Not what you need when you're already scared enough about whatever is wrong with you.
